Akiho Sendō

Akiho Sendo was born in 1969 in Amagasaki, a working-class industrial city wedged between Osaka and Kobe, and she has worked as an actor, a singer, and a tarento. That triple-track career is very much a product of its era. In the Japanese entertainment industry of the late 1980s and 1990s, you were not expected to specialise. You acted in a drama, released a single, and turned up on variety programmes in the same month, and the ones who lasted were the ones who could handle all three rooms. Amagasaki matters here. It is Kansai at its most unvarnished, and people from there tend to arrive with a verbal quickness and a refusal to be intimidated that translates well to live television. She reached the national final of Lotte's CM idol contest in 1987, and since moving to Sapporo in February 2011 she has worked from there, represented by the agency Sakinaya, so her career has quietly continued rather than ended. Longevity without spectacle is the harder trick.
