My Take
Alastair Campbell fascinates me because he proves how much power can sit just off-camera. A Keighley-born journalist who became Tony Blair's spokesman and director of communications, he shaped a decade of British politics largely through language, never holding office himself. You can argue endlessly about the ethics of spin, and people do, but you can't deny the craft. What I find compelling is his second act: the man who managed the message now stands in front of the microphone himself as broadcaster and author. The diarist's instinct never left him. Few operators have moved so deftly from backroom to spotlight.

Campbell worked as Tony Blair's spokesman and campaign director in opposition (1994–1997), then as Downing Street Press Secretary, and as the Prime Minister's Official Spokesperson (1997–2000).
