Alexandru Epureanu

Alexandru Epureanu earns my respect simply by what he overcame. Coming out of Chișinău in Moldova, a small footballing nation, and anchoring the national team's defense for years as a 189 cm centre-back is no small feat. His 2018 Order of Labour suggests just how much he meant to his country. I have a soft spot for defenders, the unglamorous men who win nothing flashy but hold everything together at the back. Born in 1986 without obvious advantages, he built a long career on discipline and physical courage. Small-nation heroes like him deserve far more attention than they get.
