Alizée

Alizée fascinates me precisely because she emerged from Corsica as a teenager and then became one of France's most exported female artists. That is no small feat for a singer working outside the Anglophone pop machine. What I admire most is that she did not chase trends after the success of "Moi... Lolita"; across six albums she protected a distinct, slightly mysterious persona instead of diluting it for wider appeal. There is a quiet stubbornness in that, an island-bred resolve beneath the delicate image. I find her career a reminder that voice and identity travel further than spectacle.
