My Take

Goalkeepers are my favorite kind of footballer to write about, because the job is so brutally unforgiving and so rarely celebrated. A keeper out of Sliven, Bulgaria, working his way to a top-flight side, embodies the patient, thankless craft I admire most. You can play ninety flawless minutes and be remembered only for the one you let in; that asymmetry would break a lot of people. What draws me to a player like this is the temperament it demands, the willingness to be the last line and stay calm when everything narrows to a single save. Unglamorous, irreplaceable, and worth cheering for.
