My Take

If I love prestige British television, Andrew Davies deserves a large share of the credit. His adaptations, from Pride and Prejudice to Middlemarch to Bleak House, are masterclasses in translating great literature into gripping screen drama. What astonishes me is his stamina: a Welsh writer still shaping War & Peace and Les Misérables well into his ninth decade. He preserves the soul of a source text while making it irresistible to modern viewers, a balance very few screenwriters manage. His original political thriller House of Cards proved he could invent as well as adapt. His name on a script is, for me, a mark of trust.
