My Take

Andy McCluskey is, to me, one of synth-pop's unsung architects. Co-founding Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark with Paul Humphreys in 1978 and remaining its one constant member, he treated the synthesizer not as a gimmick but as a vehicle for genuinely gorgeous melody. What I admire is his ability to wring real warmth and melancholy out of cold electronic textures, a songwriter's gift more than a technician's trick. From Heswall near Liverpool, he helped shape a whole era of pop without ever demanding the spotlight. I'll always have a soft spot for melody-makers like him.
