My Take

Arly Jover is a great example of how one striking role can outshine an entire body of work. To most people she's Mercury, the eerie vampire from the 1998 Blade, and I'll admit that's where I first noticed her too. What I find more compelling is that she's Spanish, born in Melilla, and has since moved beyond acting into producing, writing and directing. That shift from being cast for a memorable look to controlling the camera herself is the part of her story I respect most. It suggests an artist who didn't want to be defined by a single cult role, even a good one.
