Zico (footballer)

Zico is one of those players who makes you wish you had a time machine — watching him at Flamengo in the late 1970s and early '80s must have been something close to religious. The man was nicknamed "the White Pelé," and while that tag always felt a bit reductive, it tells you everything about the esteem people held him in. His free kicks were ruthless, his reading of the game almost telepathic, and his attacking midfield play defined an entire era of Brazilian football. The tragedy of his career is that the 1982 World Cup team — arguably the most technically gifted squad Brazil ever assembled — came home without the trophy, and Zico carries that unearned wound more than most. Post-playing, he carved out a serious coaching career across Japan, Turkey, and beyond, proving his football intelligence wasn't just in his feet.
