Ayumi Ishida

Blue Light Yokohama is one of those songs that rebuilds an entire era the second the intro starts, all neon and wet pavement and Showa-period night. Most singers would settle for being remembered for that alone. Ayumi Ishida did not. Born in Sasebo, Nagasaki in 1948, she moved from pop stardom into serious film work and, in 1987, took both the Japan Academy Prize and the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Actress for House on Fire. Crossing from hit records to the top of screen acting is a jump very few performers survive, let alone win. What gets me about her is how quiet the strength is. Singer, actress, Golden Arrow winner. The list is impressive, but it is that stillness I keep coming back to.
