My Take

I'll be honest, I came to Hiromi expecting tasteful, polite jazz piano and got absolutely steamrolled instead. The woman doesn't play the keyboard so much as attack it, her whole body bouncing and her fingers tearing across the keys like a storm, and somehow she's grinning the entire time like it's the most fun anyone's ever had. There's something fitting about her coming out of Hamamatsu, a city built on making instruments, then heading to Berklee and ending up with a Grammy in hand. What gets me is the contrast: offstage she reads like the cheerful older sister next door, but the second she starts playing those eyes lock in and the joy just pours out of her. I love that she's still out there, decades deep, playing like her life depends on it.
