My Take
Barry Gordon has one of those wonderfully sprawling careers that resist a single label. A child actor who grew into stage, film, and television work, he also sang and even waded into politics. For my generation, though, he's forever the original voice of Donatello in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a sound lodged permanently in childhood memory. What elevates him for me is that he served as the longest-tenured president of the Screen Actors Guild, defending the very performers whose ranks he came from. Devoting a life both to performing and to protecting performers strikes me as deeply principled.
