My Take

Barry White is one of the few artists whose voice alone is an entire genre. That subterranean bass, the lush Love Unlimited Orchestra, the late-night romanticism of Love's Theme, all of it feels untouchable to me decades later. It is easy to flatten him into the lover-man cliche, but he was a genuine craftsman who wrote, arranged and conducted. Two Grammys and a Walk of Fame star barely capture it. When he died in 2003 we lost a sound nobody has truly replaced. To me he remains the warmest voice to keep you company well past midnight.
