My Take

Bebi Dol, the stage name meaning Baby Doll, belongs to Dragana Saric, a Belgrade-born singer-songwriter who became a defining voice of the former Yugoslavia and Serbia. I always tip my hat to artists who write, sing and act, and she does all three. Best known internationally for representing Yugoslavia at the 1991 Eurovision, she kept performing through one of the Balkans' most turbulent eras. The gap between that sweet, doll-like name and the upheaval she surely lived through gives her story a real depth. I think of her as someone who archived a whole era in her voice, and that earns nothing but respect from me.
