Ben Bass

Ben Bass appeals to me as the sort of actor who earns trust rather than headlines. Born in Baltimore in 1968 and now American-Canadian, he is best known as Sam Swarek on Rookie Blue, the kind of grounded, grown-up detective role that younger actors rarely pull off convincingly. Rather than chasing blockbuster leads, he built his reputation on television, where viewers spend real time with a character and decide whether they believe him. That patient, dependable presence is exactly what holds an ensemble together. I have a soft spot for these reliable craftsmen, the actors who quietly become the backbone of a show.
