Bidya Devi Bhandari

Bidya Devi Bhandari's career commands my respect simply for what it represents. Serving as Nepal's second president from 2015 to 2023 and becoming the country's first woman to hold that office is no small thing, especially after stints as defence and environment minister that prove she was no ceremonial figurehead. I think it's easy to underestimate the barriers she had to clear to reach the top in Nepali politics. What I take from her story is the weight of being a 'first', of carving a path others can now follow. That alone earns my admiration.
