My Take
Billie Joe Armstrong is one of those guys who somehow never lost the plot. He grew up in Oakland, co-founded Green Day as a teenager, and then spent the next few decades proving that punk attitude and massive commercial success aren't mutually exclusive — which is a harder trick than it sounds. Dookie made him a household name, but American Idiot is the record I keep coming back to: a full-on rock opera dropped in 2004 that felt like a gut punch to the whole political moment, and it actually held up. What I love about him is that he's a genuine songwriter first — the melodies are sharp, the hooks are almost embarrassingly catchy, and there's real feeling underneath the noise. He's in his fifties now and still sounds like he means every word. That kind of sustained conviction is genuinely rare.
