Bobcat Goldthwait

What I admire about Bobcat Goldthwait is the reinvention. The world filed him away as that manic, raspy-voiced stand-up with the unhinged stage persona, and he quietly proved there was a real craftsman underneath. Comedians who move behind the camera often dilute themselves, but Goldthwait did the opposite, channeling his warped sensibility straight into directing and writing without sanding off the edges. That refusal to play it safe, to keep his odd voice intact whether he is on stage or behind the lens, is the most interesting thing about him. He chose the harder, weirder road, and I respect it.
