Brooke Smith

Brooke Smith is one of those actors who burns into your memory the moment you see her, even if you can't immediately name her — which is frankly a crime. She was Catherine Martin in The Silence of the Lambs, the woman held captive in the pit, and that image is seared into an entire generation's nightmares. What's impressive is she never let that iconic moment define a ceiling for her: she went on to play Dr. Erica Hahn on Grey's Anatomy with real warmth and complexity, then turned around and anchored Bates Motel as Sheriff Jane Greene with quiet authority. A New York actress through and through, she brings a grounded believability to every role that flashier stars often miss entirely.
