My Take

Butch Vig commands instant respect from me. Producing Nirvana's Nevermind alone would secure a place in music history, but add the Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, and L7, and you have a man who quite literally shaped the sound of 90s alternative rock. That he also drums in Garbage means he excels on both sides of the glass, a rare double threat. Hailing from tiny Viroqua, Wisconsin, there is something fittingly unpretentious about a sonic architect with such humble roots. I hold studio craftsmen in the highest regard, and Vig is among the very best.
