My Take
Charles Stross is exactly the kind of writer I root for. A former pharmacist out of Leeds who brings an engineer's logic to hard science fiction and space opera, he is at his sharpest when he is being mischievous, as in The Laundry Files, which fuses bureaucratic tedium with Lovecraftian dread. Three Hugo Awards for Best Novella plus a shelf of Locus wins is no accident; he builds dense, rigorous worlds and then undercuts them with wit. I also like that he stays openly engaged online rather than retreating into mystique. Smart, funny, and unpretentious, he is the rare idea-driven author who never forgets to entertain.
