My Take

Charlie Austin is the kind of footballer I instinctively root for. Released by Reading as a youth, he clawed up through non-league football, scored prolifically for Poole Town, got picked up by Swindon, and eventually reached the Premier League purely on graft. At 188 cm he was a proper old-school target man with a real instinct for goal. There is something moving about seeing him now back playing for a club in his hometown of Hungerford, where it all started. His career is the unglamorous, grass-roots version of the football dream, and I find that far more compelling than any academy fairy tale.
