My Take

To me Royce da 5'9" is Detroit pride in human form. He met Eminem in 1997 and formed the legendary duo Bad Meets Evil the next year, and while he is often introduced as Em's running mate, his own lyricism is extraordinary. Few rappers slice syllables with his precision, and his work as a songwriter and producer shows a range that the rapper label undersells. There is a hard, uncompromising edge to his verses, forged on cold Detroit corners, and that refusal to soften is exactly what I love about him.
