My Take

Cheick Tioté's story stays with me for both the football and the tragedy. A defensive midfielder out of Yamoussoukro who clawed his way from a hometown club to Anderlecht and beyond, he was the kind of player who did the unglamorous, essential work of breaking up attacks. I always admire midfielders whose value lives in effort rather than highlights. His death in 2017 at just 30, during training, was heartbreaking, and there is something poignant that he passed in the same June month he was born. I remember him not for statistics but for the heart he poured into every match.
