My Take

Chris Cornell remains, for me, the definitive voice of grunge — that impossible, soaring wail that could turn rage into something almost devotional. What I admire most is his range beyond the vocal range: Soundgarden's heaviness, Audioslave's groove, the stripped-bare solo work, the film soundtracks. Few rock singers ever sounded so powerful and so wounded at the same time. His death in 2017 recast his catalog in a darker light, but I resist reading everything backwards through tragedy. Listen to him live, just voice and guitar, and you hear a craftsman who treated singing as serious, almost sacred work.
