My Take

There's an understated appeal to Clemens Brummer that I respond to. Born in Berlin, he took the German national figure-skating title in 2008 and placed 14th at the European Championships that same year. He never stood on a world podium, but becoming the best in your own country carries real weight, especially in a sport where a single instant of imbalance is mercilessly converted into points. To withstand that pressure and reach the top takes a craftsman's nerve. He's since stepped away from competition, but I'd offer a quiet round of applause to a skater who genuinely left his mark on an era.
