My Take

CoCo Lee is one of those artists I think deserves far more recognition in the West than she ever got. A Chinese-American performer who broke through in Hong Kong and Taiwan in the nineties, she became a genuine pan-Asian diva, and singing "A Love Before Time" at the Oscars for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon put her on a stage few Asian artists reached then. Her death in 2023 at only 48 hit hard. What strikes me is the range, singer, dancer, composer and producer, plus a UC Irvine background. The file tags her American, but her real story is that of a boundary-crossing icon of Chinese pop.
