My Take
Condola Rashād earns my admiration because she planted her flag on the stage, the least forgiving arena there is. Breaking out in Lynn Nottage's Pulitzer-winning Ruined in 2009 and taking home a Theatre World Award, she proved herself in front of live audiences before the cameras came calling. CalArts training gives her work a rigor I appreciate, and while she does television and film, her center of gravity stays theatrical. I respect actors who choose the harder room. There is a fearlessness in committing to live performance, and Rashād has it in abundance. I am rooting for her, and I suspect her finest work is still unfolding.
