My Take
Corey Taylor is one of those guys who makes you rethink what a rock vocalist can actually do. Growing up in Des Moines, Iowa — not exactly the heavy metal capital of the world — he somehow willed himself into fronting two massively successful bands simultaneously: Slipknot, where his masked, unhinged ferocity became iconic, and Stone Sour, where he showed a completely different, melodic side that most scream-first vocalists simply don't have. What gets me is the range — not just vocal range, but the range of the whole person. He writes books, does acting, speaks his mind constantly, and yet the music never feels like it's on autopilot. Now in his 50s with that same Iowa-stubborn energy intact, he's proof that authenticity in heavy music isn't a young person's game.
