My Take

Goelz fascinates me precisely because almost nobody knows his face. He trained as a designer, then poured a lifetime into making felt and foam feel alive, joining Henson's Muppets in 1973 and giving Gonzo and Bunsen Honeydew their soul ever since. There is something quietly heroic about an artist who chooses to vanish behind a character for fifty years. Gonzo's odd tenderness, his weirdo dignity, is largely Goelz's invention. I admire performers who never need the spotlight to matter, and he is exactly that kind of craftsman. The Muppets owe him more than the credits ever say.
