My Take
To me, Wizkid is one of the architects who carried Afrobeats from Lagos streets to the global mainstream. Born in the Ojuelegba area of Surulere, Lagos, he absorbed Afrobeats, afropop, R&B, reggae and dancehall and folded them into something unmistakably his own. Winning the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Worldwide Act in 2016, plus Billboard and Soul Train recognition, signaled that African sound had reached the center of the Western stage on its own terms. What I admire most is the pride in his roots: he never sanded off where he came from to be accepted. An artist who conquers the world while staying anchored to home always wins me over.
