My Take

Dave Holland is a musician I find quietly remarkable for his longevity. An English double bassist who's been recording for roughly five decades and living in the United States since the early 1970s, he's clearly someone who never stopped evolving. What impresses me most is the range, from solo bass performances all the way up to big band writing, which speaks to real curiosity. I also respect that he launched his own label, Dare2, in 2005 rather than waiting on the industry. Being named an NEA Jazz Master puts a stamp on a career that earned it the slow way. To me, he's a craftsman who stayed independent.
