Midori Utsumi

Honestly, Midori Utsumi is one of those faces that just feels like she's always been on Japanese TV, beaming away with this bottomless energy that makes you forget she was born back in 1942. A Tokyo girl from Setagaya, a Jissen Joshi grad who built a long, busy career as an actress and tarento, and somehow she never reads as "elderly" to me at all. Her voice and her expressions bounce around the screen, and the whole frame brightens when she shows up. Her nickname, Keronpa, has a playful ring, and she came to television after graduating top of her class in English literature and working on an English-language magazine, which genuinely makes me sit up a little straighter. Aging while keeping that charm intact? She really lucked into the good kind of cute.
