Daveigh Chase

Daveigh Chase made an outsized impression on me very young. As Samantha in Donnie Darko and as the crawling, unforgettable Samara in The Ring, she did something most child actors cannot: she frightened adults and made it feel artful. Winning an MTV villain award and an Annie for her voice work before she was a teenager tells you the talent was real, not lucky. There is a particular fearlessness in a kid who can hold that kind of unsettling presence on screen. She stepped away from acting in 2016 and died in 2026 at 35, but those performances earned her a permanent place in my memory of late-nineties cinema.
