Daveigh Chase made an outsized impression on me very young. As Samantha in Donnie Darko and as the crawling, unforgettable Samara in The Ring, she did something most child actors cannot: she frightened adults and made it feel artful. Winning an MTV villain award and an Annie for her voice work before she was a teenager tells you the talent was real, not lucky.
