My Take
David Dobrik interests me as a case study in platform instinct. Born in Košice, Slovakia, raised in America, he built a million-strong following on Vine and pivoted to YouTube vlogging in 2015 just as the old platform died—reading the wave and jumping before it crashed. The 2021 Forbes 30 Under 30 nod signals there was real strategy beneath the chaotic, friends-doing-stunts energy: the editing and the engineering of moments were always deliberate. Whatever one makes of his ups and downs, I find the sheer drive of an immigrant kid carving global fame out of short videos genuinely impressive.
