My Take

David Lindley is, for my money, one of the great unsung heroes of American music. He spent his career making other artists sound better, lending his uncanny slide guitar to Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt and even Dolly Parton, while leading his own band El Rayo-X on the side. What fascinates me most is his restless curiosity, the way he collected and mastered stringed instruments from around the world. He passed in 2023, but that wailing, unmistakable tone lingers. I admire musicians who serve the song over their ego, and Lindley was the patron saint of exactly that.
