Davide Santon

Davide Santon was once labeled the next big thing in Italian football, and that early hype is its own fascinating story. Born in Portomaggiore near Ferrara in 1991, he burst out of the Inter Milan youth system and was thrown into the first team at 17 under Jose Mourinho, who openly raved about him. The left wing-back never quite reached those dizzy projected heights, but I think that's more a comment on impossible expectations than his actual ability. He carved out a solid, long career marking dangerous wingers. Sometimes 'didn't become a superstar' really just means 'had a good, professional career,' and that's fine.
