My Take
Deepa Mehta is, to my mind, a genuinely courageous filmmaker. The Elements trilogy, especially Water with its Academy Award nomination, tackled taboos in Indian society head-on, and she faced real obstruction while making it. That she finished anyway tells me everything about her resolve. The Canadian honors are nice, but what I value far more is her refusal to look away from difficult subjects. An India-born, Canada-based director carrying two cultural perspectives, she uses that vantage point to ask uncomfortable questions rather than to soothe. I respect directors who treat cinema as a tool for honesty, and Mehta clearly does.
