Derek Haas

Derek Haas is the kind of name I wish audiences memorized as readily as they do leading actors. A Dallas-born screenwriter, novelist, and producer, he works in the architecture of storytelling rather than its spotlight. I have a soft spot for craftsmen like this, the people who build the skeleton everyone else fleshes out. There's something honest about a career spent solving structural problems no viewer ever consciously notices. Knowing his name sharpens how I read a film's bones. I'd rather follow a reliable writer's body of work than chase whichever star happens to be on the poster this season.
