My Take

Derwin James interests me because of the position he plays as much as how he plays it. A Haines City, Florida product who starred at Florida State and went to the Chargers in the first round of the 2018 draft, he is a 191 cm safety, which is almost unfair for the role. Safety is the chessmaster of a defense: you read the whole field, stop the run, and break up the pass. Picture a man that size patrolling the back, surveying everything, and you understand the dread he imposes on quarterbacks. To me he embodies the modern, do-everything defender, physical gifts married to genuine field intelligence.
