My Take

I'll be honest — I don't think we'll ever fully agree on who the greatest footballer of all time was, but every time that debate comes up, Maradona's 1986 World Cup run shuts a lot of arguments down real fast. The man was 5'5", built like a fire hydrant, and yet he moved through entire defenses like they were standing still. The Hand of God goal was cheeky as hell — pure Diego, honestly — but the one four minutes later, where he dribbled past five England players, is probably the greatest individual goal in football history, and you can fight me on that. He carried Napoli to back-to-back Serie A titles, two of the least expected championship runs in Italian football history. His life off the pitch was messy and complicated and he made no apologies for it. FIFA named him co-Player of the Century alongside Pelé, and that feels about right. Gone in 2020, but genuinely irreplaceable.
