My Take

Sand earns my respect through sheer devotion to a single sport. Paired with Jenni Meno he took 1998 World silver, two World bronzes, and three straight U.S. titles, and that competitive partner became his life partner, which is about as romantic as sport gets. Two people who learned to breathe in unison on the ice ending up married is a story I cannot resist. After competing he stayed close to the rink as a coach and technical specialist, simply trading the skater's view for the mentor's. A whole life given to one discipline, with no urge to walk away, deserves quiet admiration.
