My Take
DJ Quik is, for my money, one of the most underrated architects of West Coast hip-hop. Coming straight out of Compton, he mastered the G-funk sound not just as a rapper but as a producer with an unmistakable touch. His collaborator list reads like a hall of fame, from Snoop Dogg and Kurupt to Tupac and even Shaquille O'Neal. What I admire most is that his real genius lives in the groove of his tracks, that warm, rolling funk that you feel in your chest. He proves that the people shaping the sound behind the scenes are often the true backbone of a movement.
