My Take
I still remember the first time I heard DJ Shadow's Endtroducing. Born Joshua Davis in Hayward, California, in 1972, he built an entire album almost entirely from samples, digging fragments out of mountains of secondhand records and assembling scenes no one had heard before. To me he is a craftsman who can make instrumental hip-hop genuinely melancholy and cinematic. Through his solo work and UNKLE, he has refused to chase trends, holding stubbornly to his own aesthetic. He is less a flashy DJ than a quiet seeker carving sound in the dark, and that depth is exactly what I respect.
