Djibril Cissé

Cisse is one of those forwards I always found more compelling than his goal tally alone suggests. Coming up through Arles and Auxerre, he had a striker's ruthlessness, but what stays with me is his resilience: shattering injuries that would end most careers, and then coming back swinging every time. He also turned self-presentation into an art form, reinventing his look like some flamboyant aristocrat. I admire athletes who refuse to be flattened by setbacks, and his move into coaching makes me curious whether that same defiant spirit translates to the touchline.
