Egashira 2:50

Egashira 2:50 is the hardest Japanese comedian to explain to anyone who hasn't seen him. Born Hideharu Egashira in Kanzaki, Saga in 1965, university-educated, he chose a career built almost entirely on transgression — physical, loud, deliberately unmanageable on live television. Broadcasters have never quite known what to do with him, and he has paid for that more than once. Then the internet arrived, and the exact quality that made him a liability on TV became his greatest asset: on YouTube nobody has to approve him first, and the audience that always loved him could finally reach him directly. What I find genuinely impressive is the discipline hiding underneath. His act looks like pure chaos, but chaos that consistently lands for decades is not accidental — it is calculated, then concealed. He built a career on being willing to be disliked in the moment in order to be funny, and almost nobody else has the nerve to try it.
