My Take
Elia Suleiman is, for me, one of cinema's great masters of eloquent silence. A Palestinian filmmaker from Nazareth, he turns the daily absurdities of life under occupation into deadpan, almost wordless comedy that lands as both laughter and grief. Divine Intervention winning the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2002 confirmed that you can speak about the gravest political realities without ever raising your voice. What impresses me most is his refusal to compromise his style for accessibility, yet still earning a European Film Award and a World Cinema honor. He proves that restraint, not volume, can be the sharpest political instrument an artist owns.
