My Take

Rod Lurie intrigues me as a man who switched sides of the camera. Israeli-born and American-raised, he began as a film critic and journalist, the person who judges others' work, before daring to make his own, where every word can boomerang back. That takes nerve. What I value most is his appetite for stories about power and politics; he uses cinema to pose arguments rather than chase spectacle. Watching an analytical mind move from dissecting movies to directing them is unusually interesting to me. Lurie strikes me as a thinking craftsman, more committed to ideas than to flash.
