Eric Burdon

Eric Burdon has one of the most arresting voices in rock history, and I never tire of it. When that gravelly roar tore through The Animals' House of the Rising Sun, it felt impossible that a young man from Walker had absorbed so much American blues soul. What I love most is his restlessness, leaping from British R&B into the funk of War without hesitation. Born in 1941 and still fronting the Animals decades on, he embodies a stubborn, lived-in authenticity. There are smoother singers, but few carry the weight of a whole life inside their voice the way Burdon does.
