Éric Deflandre

Éric Deflandre is the sort of player I instinctively want to defend. A right-back from Rocourt, Belgium, he worked one of football's least glamorous and most exhausting positions, sprinting up and down the flank for ninety minutes, defending and attacking in equal measure. Full-backs rarely make the highlight reels, yet teams collapse without them. He also has a personal website. Born in 1973, he's a craftsman who quietly held Belgian football together, and craftsmen like that deserve more applause than they get.
